Quite the adventurers

It has been an interesting and adventurous day here in Madrid. Mom and I woke up around 10:30 this morning. If you know her, you would know that this is totally out of character. The woman wakes up at 5am everyday. She was shocked and convinced that there was "a gas leak" that knocked her out and made her sleep for so long. I wonder if she considered the fact that we have walked a good marathon per day for the past 12 days..?
So we went out for lunch around noon or 1 for our first adventure. Lunch was an adventure because Mom likes to play the "grab bag" game when ordering from a menu and just pick something blindly (most of the times it is a success...however, this was not one of those times). We decided that we should order some Spanish food. We got some paella, which is like Spanish rice. I wish I had taken a picture because the paella came out on a plate with a rather large shrimp thing on top with about 6-inch long whiskers. I kept finding shrimp whiskers in my rice all throughout the meal. And little round pieces of calimari which tasted similar to what I would imagine my hair rubberbands to taste like. So we made lunch a quick one since I started getting a tad bit queasy. Hey, we're learning though, right?? Process of elimination. And the shrimp whiskered, hair rubberband rice has officially been eliminated.
Next, we decided to take the metro to go and visit my school where I will be studying this summer. We got our map and tickets and boarded the metro. Then I had the bright idea to veer from our planned route because I found a "shortcut." WRONG. About 3 hours later, we arrived at my school. Oops. I always need to listen to Mom!
Although some of our adventures weren't quite as successful as we hoped, we still laughed all day long and had a blast. I don't know what I would do if I was here by myself in the beginning of this venture out of my comfort zone. Here are a few pictures from today! There are not too many due to the "gas leak" which caused us to sleep away half of the day. Ha!
The cutest Vespa I've seen yet

Hey Mom!!

Side street

Doing the usual, checking out the scarves in every store

Stores really do close down for siesta time in the afternoon!

I guess the people here aren't used to southern, double names. I ordered 2 cappuccinos and told them my name. I guess they thought I said one name for each cup. And who the heck is Nelsy???? Maybe I should change my name to Sylvia or something.

The best Metro navigator in all of Spain... sike!

My little school

It's like a teeny little high school

Here is Mom with her best purchase of the day, bandaids for her blisters. Sorry Mom!!

¡Adios, it's time to take a visit to the mercado!
