Florence Adventures, take one

Here we are, about to call it a night after our first day in “Fireze.” We have been touring the city with Paolo, our tour guide who was another art history major and was so knowledgeable about her city. She was a great guide and had the cutest little daughter named Allegra. We got to see an awesome art museum that was also a university where the statue of David is. So incredible! Seriously people, I might go all artsy on ya while I’m in Europe since we are experiencing all this art and whatnot. We also got to see 3 of the last Medici violas and cellos in the world and oh my goodness we went to this secret handcrafted mosaic store. It was unbelievable..there was a father and a son who have grown up creating mosiacs that looked so much like paintings. Hundreds and hundreds of different pieces of colored stones that they went and discovered themselves from Afghanistan, Egypt, South Africa and tons more places. Really really neat. Florence has a really different feel than Rome, much more medieval architecture. They still eat gelato (“take a gelato”) and of course we did. We got to check out the market on the streets where they are known for selling quality leather at great prices. All I gotta say is Mom had a hay day at the market. It has been pretty fun not having a cell phone. I am so used to checking my phone out of habit and relying on it to communicate. I bought a cell phone for 12 Euros here to make calls to the U.S. but haven’t quite figured out how to work it yet. All those country codes make me crazy. But Jacob, Mom and I haven’t gotten split up from each other. Mainly because Jacob is the leader of the pack. Mom and I tend to get a little distracted especially seeing all of those sellers on the street. How many times have I heard Jacob tell me “eyes on the prize, NJ”..?? He keeps me in line. Oh my goodness..we have been laughing SO much all week. The Italians must think we are nuts! 3 people asked us today if Jacob and I were brother and sister. I always tell Jacob that I think it would be so fun if we were siblings because I think we would be best friends. He tells me that’s weird. So I couldn’t pretend we were sibs and had to tell the people we were “novios” (boyfriend and girlfriend). Speaking of love, there is so much PDA in Europe. We were just casually touring around Madrid on our double decker bus the other day and look over into the park to find lots of couples realllllllllly enjoying their afternoon. Take it easy folks.
Time for us to go…we’ve got to go check out the tombs of the Etruscans who built a town before the Romans in Florence in 800 BC. Sorry for so many details y’all..I get a little strung out with the day-reviewing.
