I have neglected my blog lately..sorry guys. The internet in the casa isn’t strong enough to add a post on the blog. I wrote this blog a few days ago and am just posting it late. Hope everyone has been doing well and had a great Father's Day. Speaking of, Happy Father's Day once again to the greatest dad in the world, aka, my Pop!! You da best. My dad really is one of the most caring, serving, just plain awesome and fun dads in the world!
Well, Freaky has yet to return. Sad. Even with the flyers and all. "Lost bird"..those flyers got me everytime I saw one. I think that's sweet that she made them but if I saw a lost bird (first of all, how would I really be able to pick it out..Freaky just looks like an ordinary bird) how would I catch it? With my big ole net that I keep in my purse or carry with me on the metro?? What in the world? But don't worry, we got 3 turtles and 3 new birds to make up for his loss. Esperanza found a little birdie on the street that looked like he was hurt so she just brought him home with her and started feeding him and taking care of him (carrying him around with her like a child) and whatnot. Esperanza finally figured out that we aren't the biggest fans of mayo. She made us hotdogs and gave us mayo with them and we didn't eat the mayo..we told her we preferred ketchup. So a few nights ago, we had spaghetti and what was on top? Ketchup! Interesante. The Spaniards diet here consists of ham, bread, mayo, and fried eggs. Can't wait to hit up some ribs when I get home. And Mexican food. And sweet tea. God bless the USA, that's all I gotta say.
This past weekend, we took a trip to Santander which is on the Northern coast of Spain. The beaches were really pretty, but my favorite part of the trip was the bus ride, looking out the windows into the beautiful green mountains and valleys and of course, the poppies. Literally my favorite thing in all of Europe are the red poppies. Love them. I will post pictures when I have better internet connection.
This is our last week of school here. We have a long weekend and then have finals on Monday and then Wednesday I am heading home to sweet home Alabama! I’ve been having some good hangouts with a couple of my new friends here. We hang out at McDonalds because it’s delicious. That Happy Meal has never made me happier. I'm having fun at school with my awesome teacher, Ana. I've been learning about some of the cultural things in Spain. Last week we talked about marriage. I have not seen a single diamond ring since I've been here. And I am a girl so I check out people's rings on the reg. I asked my teacher about this strange occurrence. She said that nobody wears diamond rings here. Probably because no one wears engagement rings. She thought it was a made up thing that she has seen on American movies about making an engagement such a big deal. She thought it was so strange that men in the U.S. ask a girl's dad for permission to marry his daughter and thought it was equally as weird that he gets down on one knee during the proposal. She said that only men who want to marry the king's daughter ask for his permission. Proposals are so casual here..just imagine you're doing dishes with your boyfriend and he casually says "hey, wanna get married or somethin?" There you have it, a Spanish proposal. I would cry and ask if he was joking. I mean helllooooo that's pretty much what every girl dreams of..the day when your man gets down on his knee and asks you to marry him!!! Gosh, might as well text her and suggest getting married or something if you're going to stoop down to that level. Sorry, I'm getting a little carried away over here. Here is something else interesting. I never see people walking outside using their cell phone. Ever. Cell phones are really expensive here. I learned a lot of the text messaging lingo here and Ana told us that if you're planning on meeting up with someone over here, you will text them and say something about what time and where you'll meet up and then "dame un toque." A toque is a "missed call"...so back home if I was meeting up with someone, I would usually text them and say "leaving now" or "just got here." But here, you call the other person real quick and hang up before they answer to let them know that you haven't forgotten about them! How funny! So I've had fun learning about all of the different things about España. Oh yeah, Esperanza thought I needed a Spanish name since mine is so not-Spanish. So from now on, I am "Lola"...she even introduced me to her friend as Lola, and was dead serious. I busted out laughing because I feel like I have 2 identities!
More to come :) (really soon because I am posting 2 entries in 1 day)
Un beso,
Lola
